The Ritual I Miss Most: What 12 Years of Daily Sauna Practice Taught Me About Showing Up for Myself

The daily infrared sauna ritual — cedar, warmth, silence, practice

Key Takeaways

  • After 12 years of daily use, what I miss when traveling isn't the health benefits — it's the ritual. The cedar, the warmth building, the phone left outside, the mental shift at minute 15 when the chatter quiets. The post-session calm that lasts an hour
  • Modern life has optimized away most daily rituals. A home sauna fills that gap — daily, physical, technology-free, ritualistic. The health benefits are almost secondary to the identity shift it creates
  • The 'infrared afterglow' — 30-60 minutes of deep calm, clarity, groundedness after stepping out — is the real product. Not the heaters or the specifications. The feeling of knowing you did something meaningful for yourself
  • The identity shift: after months of daily practice, you stop thinking 'I should use my sauna' and start thinking 'I am someone who takes care of myself.' That shift makes the practice stick and transforms other areas of life
  • I've stayed in beautiful hotels and experienced amazing things traveling. Every night, I think about my sauna. Not because of wavelengths. Because I miss having a space that's mine, a practice that's mine

I'm in a hotel room somewhere. The bed is perfect. The view is beautiful. The day was full.

And all I can think about is my sauna.

Not the infrared wavelengths. Not the heat shock proteins. Not the cardiovascular data I've spent 12 years studying. What I miss — what my body actually aches for — is the ritual.

The ritual

It starts before the heat. The towels laid out. The water poured. The sauna turned on — 15 minutes to warm up, which is really 15 minutes for ME to warm up. To shift from doing to being. To let the day's noise start fading while the cedar panels absorb the heat and begin releasing that scent.

The phone goes outside. This is non-negotiable and it took me years to commit to. But it's the most important part. The phone stays outside, and with it goes every notification, every email, every demand on my attention. For the next 30 minutes, the world can wait.

I step in. The warmth wraps around me — not aggressive, not sudden, but building. The cedar bench is warm under my legs. The air smells like forest. I sit.

What happens at minute 15

The first 10 minutes are still noisy. The mind replays the day. Plans tomorrow. Rehashes a conversation. This is normal and I stopped fighting it years ago.

Around minute 15, something shifts. I can feel it physically — the moment the heat reaches deep enough that my body takes priority over my mind. The thoughts don't stop, but they soften. The volume turns down. My shoulders drop two inches. My jaw unclenches. Breath deepens without trying.

This is the moment. After 12 years, I know it's coming, and I still can't rush it. It arrives on its own schedule. Some days it takes 12 minutes. Some days 20. But it always comes.

The afterglow

I step out. Cool air on hot skin. That tingling aliveness across every surface of my body. Heart settling. Eyes softer.

The next 30-60 minutes are the real product. Not the heaters. Not the cedar. Not the specifications I've spent my career perfecting. THIS — this window of deep calm, of clarity without effort, of being fully arrived in my own body — this is what I built my company to deliver.

I sit in my robe. I don't reach for my phone. Not yet. The afterglow is too valuable to interrupt. It's the quietest, most grounded version of myself, and I've learned to protect those minutes the way I protect my sauna time itself.

Why we need this

Modern life has optimized away most of the daily practices that once gave our lives rhythm. We've replaced rituals with efficiency, contemplation with productivity, physical presence with screen time. We're more connected and less grounded than any generation before us.

A daily sauna practice fills the gap that most people don't even know exists until they find it. It's one of the few remaining practices that is daily, physical, solitary (or intentionally shared), technology-free, and ritualistic. It asks nothing of you except to sit in warmth and be present. The health benefits — cardiovascular, neurochemical, immune, all of it — are real. But they're almost secondary to what the practice itself provides: a daily appointment with yourself that nobody else can claim.

The identity shift

Something happens after weeks and months of daily practice. You stop thinking 'I should use my sauna today' and start thinking 'I am someone who takes care of myself every day.' The obligation becomes identity. And identity is what makes a practice permanent.

That shift — from 'I have a sauna' to 'I have a practice' — is what transforms everything else. You sleep better because you sauna in the evening. You eat better because you don't want to undo the feeling. You handle stress differently because you know you have a reset waiting at home. The sauna becomes the keystone that holds the rest of the arch together.

An invitation

I've stayed in beautiful hotels. Eaten incredible meals. Experienced amazing things while traveling. And every night, I think about my sauna. Not because I'm obsessed with infrared wavelengths. Because I miss the feeling of having a space that's mine, a practice that's mine, a daily conversation with my own body that nobody else is part of.

If anything in these words resonates — if you're looking for a daily practice that asks nothing of you except to show up and be warm — I'd love to help you build the space that makes it possible.
