Infrared Sauna Benefits

From Magic to Medical: Why SaunaCloud Bets on Evidence Over Hype (2026)

SaunaCloud evidence-first philosophy — from magic to medical infrared sauna science

Key Takeaways

  • The infrared sauna industry evolved from 'magic' (vague spiritual claims, 1990s-2000s) to 'medical' (peer-reviewed research in JAMA Psychiatry, UCSF clinical trials, 20-year Finnish cohort studies). SaunaCloud was founded in 2014 at the inflection point — when science became strong enough to stand without hype
  • We've removed our own previous overclaims. Our cancer page used to claim infrared 'eradicates disease agents.' Our infections page claimed FIR 'eliminates MRSA.' We rewrote them because the evidence didn't support those claims. Companies rarely admit their marketing was wrong. We'd rather earn trust than protect ego
  • SaunaCloud is an engineering company, not a wellness brand. We design and manufacture our own VantaWave heaters, CORE 5 power supply, control systems, and software in-house. When something needs improvement, we redesign it — not file a complaint with a factory overseas
  • What we won't claim: infrared cures cancer, infrared kills bacteria, full-spectrum delivers near-infrared therapy (Wien's Law makes this impossible), chromotherapy LEDs provide medical treatment, or that saunas replace medical care. Every claim on this site is supported by published research or labeled as theoretical
  • Our promise: if we discover we've gotten something wrong, we'll update the page. Science evolves. Our content evolves with it. We'd rather lose a sale by being honest than make one by overpromising

In 2014, I tore my ACL. During recovery, someone suggested I try an infrared sauna for pain and inflammation. I was skeptical — it sounded like wellness marketing. But I was desperate, so I tried it.

It helped. Noticeably. And that created a problem for me — because I'm an engineer, and 'it worked but I don't know why' is an unacceptable state of affairs. I needed to understand the mechanism. That obsession became SaunaCloud.

Twelve years and 3,000+ custom installations later, I've read every significant study on infrared therapy, built the most advanced heater and power supply systems in the industry, and — most importantly — learned what the evidence actually supports and what it doesn't. This page explains why that distinction is the foundation of everything we build.

The industry's three phases

Phase 1 — 'Far infrared is magic' (1990s-2000s): Vague claims, spiritual overtones, minimal published evidence. Infrared saunas marketed as an alternative to medicine — 'detoxify your body,' 'heal at the cellular level,' 'ancient healing technology.' No distinction between what was measured and what was imagined.

Phase 2 — 'Science is catching up' (2010s): The Laukkanen cohort published in JAMA Internal Medicine (2015). Waon therapy studies for heart failure. Janssen 2016 depression RCT in JAMA Psychiatry. Real research began validating specific claims with specific mechanisms. The science wasn't magic — it was hormesis, heat shock proteins, autonomic rebalancing.

Phase 3 — 'Evidence-based wellness' (2020s): UCSF clinical trials. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Mechanism research with specific cellular pathways. The Ahokas 2025 athletic recovery study. The legitimate science is now strong enough to stand on its own — without the magic. SaunaCloud exists in this phase.

We removed our own claims

This is the part most companies would never admit. Previous versions of our own website made claims we can no longer stand behind.

Our cancer page used to claim that far infrared heat 'eradicates most agents of disease.' We removed it — because there are zero clinical trials of home infrared sauna treating cancer. Our chronic infections page claimed infrared was 'proven extremely effective in the treatment and elimination of infections.' We removed it — because no RCTs support this claim. Our cellulite page implied infrared 'dissolves fat.' We removed it — because fat doesn't dissolve at sauna temperatures.

Companies in the wellness industry don't usually admit their old marketing was wrong. We do — because the goal was never to sell you a fantasy. It was to build something real.

An engineering company, not a wellness brand

SaunaCloud isn't a marketing company that resells white-label saunas. We're an engineering company that designs and manufactures the core technology in-house: VantaWave heaters — engineered from Stefan-Boltzmann physics, not sourced from a catalog. CORE 5 power supply — designed because the #1 failure point in the industry needed an engineering solution, not a warranty claim. Control systems and software — our own. NEC Article 424-compliant design. Red light therapy integration at therapeutic specifications, not decorative.

When we find a problem, we redesign the component. We don't file a complaint with a factory on the other side of the world and wait for a replacement unit that has the same design flaw. Vertical integration means we own the engineering. That's exceptionally rare in this industry.

What we won't claim

This list is as important as anything we DO claim — because everything we don't say makes everything we do say more believable.

We won't claim infrared saunas cure cancer — the research is on clinical hyperthermia, not home saunas. We won't claim infrared kills bacteria or viruses — the evidence doesn't support this for home sauna use. We won't claim full-spectrum saunas deliver near-infrared therapy — Wien's Law makes this physically impossible from standard heater panels. We won't claim chromotherapy LEDs provide medical treatment — decorative power levels, not therapeutic. We won't claim salt walls deliver halotherapy — beautiful ambiance, not medicine. We won't sell you features we can't back with evidence.

What the evidence DOES support

The evidence IS strong for many things — and they're enough to build a company on without overreaching. Cardiovascular health (50% reduced CV mortality in observational data, Waon therapy for heart failure). Depression and mood (Janssen 2016 RCT, Mason/UCSF trials). Pain relief (multiple studies across conditions). Sleep improvement. Autonomic nervous system rebalancing. Heat shock protein activation. Athletic recovery (Ahokas 2025). Longevity (40% reduced all-cause mortality). These are real, published, peer-reviewed findings.

The promise

Every claim on this website is either supported by published research or clearly labeled as theoretical. Where evidence is strong, we say so. Where evidence is limited, we say that too. Where evidence is absent, we won't pretend otherwise.

If we discover we've gotten something wrong — as science evolves, as new studies publish, as our understanding deepens — we'll update the page. We've already done this multiple times. The content on this site today is more honest than it was a year ago. A year from now, it will be more honest still.

We'd rather lose a sale by being honest than make one by overpromising. That's not a marketing strategy — it's the only way to build a company we're proud of.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the evidence didn't support them. When we reviewed our content against the published research, some of our older pages made claims that went beyond what the studies actually showed. We could have left them up — most companies do. We chose to rewrite them honestly because trust matters more than marketing convenience.

It filters out customers who want to buy magic. It attracts customers who want to buy engineering. The people who read our cancer page, see that we won't overclaim, and STILL choose SaunaCloud — those are customers who trust us. And they refer others who trust us. Honesty is the best long-term sales strategy we've ever implemented.

We look at the published research and ask: is there at least one peer-reviewed study supporting this claim in the specific context of home infrared sauna use? If yes, we cite it. If the evidence is from a different context (clinical hyperthermia, animal studies, cell culture), we explain the distinction. If there's no evidence, we say so. The threshold is 'would a careful scientist be comfortable with this statement?' — not 'will this sell more saunas?'

Two things: engineering and honesty. Engineering: we design and manufacture our own heaters, power supply, and control systems in-house — exceptionally rare in an industry of white-label resellers. Honesty: we cite evidence, acknowledge limitations, remove claims that don't hold up, and refuse to sell features we can't back with data. Most companies in this space are marketers. We're engineers who happen to market.
